The Institute of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases is a scientific and clinical unit for respiratory diseases. The Institute deals with the diagnosis and treatment of the full range of lung diseases, including lung cancer, respiratory failure, respiratory infections, pleural and pericardial pathology.

The institute's domain is the area of interstitial lung diseases, many of which are rare lung diseases such as sarcoidosis, spontaneous pulmonary fibrosis, granulomatosis with vasculitis, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, alveolar proteinosis, cystic fibrosis, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. IGiChP is an expert centre for rare diseases within the European reference network ERN-LUNG. It has also been a World Health Organisation reference unit for tuberculosis since 1993. The structure of the Institute includes four clinics and diagnostic departments (radiology and diagnostic imaging, pathomorphology, microbiology, genetics and immunology, respiratory functional testing). The three Pulmonary Clinics provide conservative treatment, and the Department of Surgery performs invasive diagnostic examinations and thoracic surgery. Outpatient specialist care services are provided at the Outpatient Clinic. Extensive diagnostic facilities provide a wide range of genetic, molecular, pathomorphological, immunohistochemical and microbiological analyses.

Commercial clinical trials involving phase II-IV studies are conducted at the Institute. These are mainly multicentre international studies in therapeutic areas such as asthma, COPD, lung cancer, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. The clinical teams implementing the trials are composed of experienced GCP-certified medical staff. Their work is supported in the administrative field by the Clinical Trials Section. Our priority in the role of Observer at the PCTN is the internal implementation of appropriate management standards and procedures in the area of clinical research, as well as the establishment of cooperation with other entities operating in the field of both commercial and non-commercial clinical projects.
